Claire's Pyrography

Pyrography is also known as woodburning, or pokerwork - it is done using a hot wire or poker to burn designs and pictures straight onto wood. I use a clean, smooth piece of wood, onto which I will first do a pencil sketch of the drawing or design I want. When I'm happy with that, I will then start to burn the image into the wood.

There are many different pyrography tools available for woodburning. As a beginner I have so far only used one, the Peter Child machine, and would highly recommend it. The wire point is very versatile and allows the user to create their own tips easily and quickly. The handle stays cool, even after long periods of use, giving you good control over your work.

Pyrography is a great way to relax and an easy hobby to get started in. All you need is a piece of wood to burn on, and a burner. You do not even need to be particularly talented when it comes to drawing, as there are lots of widely available books on the subject, full of designs and ideas that you can trace straight onto your wood.

This Tigar has been hand drawn with pencil onto a piece of veneer then burnt using a wire point burner.

This Great Tit has been finished in the same   way as the Tigar on another piece of veneer.
